Grammar Point Summary

【被 - being done】

【被】Character 被 (bèibèi) as a noun is "blanket" or "quilt". When it is used with a verb, it is a key way to express the passive in modern Mandarin Chinese. To create a passive sentence using 被 from a normal sentence, check below:

Subject + Verb Phrase + Object: 哥哥 + 打了 + 弟弟 Older brother hit younger brother.

Object + + Subject + Verb Phrase: 弟弟 + + 哥哥 + 打了 Younger brother was hit by older brother.

Sometimes, due to different reasons, in passive sentence, the "subject" may be omitted.

Object + + Verb Phrase: 弟弟 + + 打了 Younger brother was hit.

A: 奇怪!我的热狗吃了 It's strange! My hot dog was eaten.

B: Oops!你的热狗我吃了 Oops! Your hot dog was eaten by me.

A: 怎么回事?我的酒都没有了?A: What's the matter? My beer was all gone.

B: 你不知道吗?你的酒你自己喝了 B: Don't you know that your beer was drunk by youself.

他老师问了好多个问题 He was asked many questions by the teacher.

In recent years, with wide spread of internet, Chinese started to comment on many things happened around them. One intersting thing is that people invented a new way of using passive sentence with 被. Instead of using it for verbs which should accept objects, it is used for verbs which do not accept objects. From pure grammar's point of view, it is incorrect. But it is an interesting way to express their view.

For example, there was a suspect who was taken to police station for questions. The suspect died overnight and it was officially declared by police that the suspect committed suicide. People who did not buy it hence commented that "the suspect was suicided."
