Grammar Point Summary



【来/去】As a verb 来去 (lái qùlái_qù) basically means "come/go" . But there are so interesting points about it.

(1) "来 + Place" expresses the location of speaker; and "去 + Place" expresses location direction away from speaker.

     哥哥上海一年了 (so already in Shanghai) My older brother has lived in Shanghai for one year.

     去年,我们上海住了九天 (away from Shanghai now) Last year, we went to Shanghai and lived there for 9 days.

(2) Verb + 来/去 to complete a direction for the verb. If direction toward speaker use 来; if direction away from speaker use 去.

     你快点下 You get down quickly.

     我在车里,你上 I am in the car. You come up.

     妈妈,你晚上回吗? Mom, are you coming back tonight?

     马克要回 Mark is g oing to go back.

(3) 到 + Place + 来/去 arrive at Place (to/away from speaker).

     他的妹妹上海 His younger sister has come to Shanghai.

     马克要加州 Mark is going to leave for California.

     我那里看一看 I go there to take a look.

     奶奶,你这里找一找猫猫 Granny, you come here to search for the cat.

(4) Verb + 来 + Verb + 去 = verb is repeated around.

     你不要这么走来走去 You don't walk around like this.

     他说来说去,就是要吃包和饺子 He talks around just wants to eat baozi and jiaozi.

     奶奶找来找去,还是没有找到没猫 Granny searched around but still did not find the cat.

     你吃来吃去,不是吃包子就是吃饺子 You eat around, if it is not baozi then it is jiaozi.
