【老是 - always】

【老是】literally means "old to be", which is a term used a lot in conversation meaning "always" (lǎo shìlǎo_shì). 老是 is an adverb. It expresses that an action or a condition constantly repeats or continues. It also has an unsatisfied or frustrated tone. It can be interchanged with the word 总是 zǒng shìzǒng_shì.

(1) 老是 + Verb.

     你为什么老是问我? Why do you always ask me?

     小孩子老是 Why did the little kid always cry?

老 + Verb =老是 +Verb. You can use "老" instead of "老是"

     弟弟 Young brother always cries.

(2) 老是 + (Adverb) + Adjective. When it is used together with an adjective, it usually has an adverb before it, such as "很, 非常, 这么, 那么" etc.

     爸爸做的包子老是那么大 ] The baozi dad made is always that big.

     她老是很开心 She is always very happy.

     老人老是这么老吗? Is old man always that old?

     我的包子老是小小的 My baozi is alwasys so small.
